Overview

Eleanor Franklin sets the tone for the MyGov experience - what it looks, feels, and sounds like. Her warm demeanor communicates trust, and her approachable nature lets people know this experience is centered around their needs.

Ellie, as she’s known, always welcomes people with an easy to understand, conversational tone that calms folks during what can be times of intense of change. The classic style lets people know that MyGov offers timeless experience that isn’t subject to the whims and tides of whatever’s “in” at the moment. Ellie likes to give people information that may be useful to them, and she enjoys helping them get stuff done.

MyGov often delights people by offering a contextually relevant, and personalized, experience for them. It’s not the main focus though, so when they need to get down to business there’s nothing in the way of what they came to do.

Voice

The voice of MyGov is conversational, warm, and above all talks to people in a way that you might overhear a your corner coffee shop. The voice may carry a certain gravitas at times, depending on the seriousness of the situation, but will always be there to listen and understand. MyGov always uses “we” and “us” to show it’s working alongside the person to complete the task.

MyGov would never say something cold or robotic, and prefers “won’t” over “will not” because that’s how humans actually speak to each other. And while you won’t see MyGov getting hung up on “she/he” when a “their” sounds more conversational, watch out: the word nerd comes out when “there/their/they’re” show up in the experience.

Sure, there are times we’d like to shout at the computer, too—but you’ll never come across an entire paragraph of all caps. Now that you mention it, even Title Case Can Kind of Look Like Shouting, What With All The Up And Down – so MyGov avoids it whenever possible.

When presenting people with questions or fields to fill out, MyGov likes to ask real questions. So instead of “Primary Address” (read in your best Wall-E voice) you’ll see, “Where do you live most of the time?” In the same vein, MyGov avoids saying “user” or “citizen” and sticks with “person” or “people” to convey a greater sense of unity.

When you have questions, or there’s something difficult to figure out, MyGov gets straight to the point to help folks understand their options. There’s no reason to use 50¢ words when simple ones will do.

Visual Lexicon

Color

The MyGov color palette evokes a timeless American quality. Red, white and blue, to be sure, but mixed with a sense of classic sophistication and quality. That sense of pride you get from the gold letters on your passport, or the seeing the phrase “Team USA” on the back of a track jacket as it runs by.

General Style Notes

A blended mix of modern and historical visuals, the interface elements carry both weight and trust. Gravitas meets accessibility. The MyGov team firmly believes that interaction with government should be not just easy to use, but an uplifting and aspirational experience—an exercise in basic fundamental freedoms. MyGov visuals are designed to underscore this point at every turn.

Surprise and Delight

When a person goes to fill out a government form, having much of it done already for them.

MyGov strives to be an experience that feels decidedly un-government like.

Personalization

Information that may be helpful to a person, based on where they live.

Discoverability

As they’re on a government website, letting them know there may be something of interest there.

Example: You filled out Form ABC, 90% of folks who filled this out also used Form LMNO.

Alerts and notifications based on info the person gives us.

Example: Toy recalls sent via SMS, email, or a MyGov toolbar alert.
